Wireless access help?

i was wondering if I could just plug a router into the wall and use an ethernet cable from the router to my xbox and have internet access on my xbox. or do i have to have a house computer? i have a laptop at my house and i was wondering if i could plug the router into the wall without a computer attached to it and then set up the wireless configurations through my laptop and then just plug the xbox directly into the router. would that work? if not, how can i get my xbox online without a desktop computer in the household.
