What can I do about replacing cable tv with an alternative?

We don't watch most of our cable stations. I know that through netflix you can get a box and get tv and movies through them, but I'm not sure I'm ready to trust that source for all our tv needs. i spoke with at&t about getting wireless tv through them and was very surprised to find they didnt have that capacity. i dont want dish/satellite tv either, just some basic channels but still hd reception since we have a large lcd tv. what are my options and what is a good objective source to talk to about the hook ups, technical details and advantages/disadvantages of different approaches?
